I've decided to post the Bible studies I prepare for my kids on Wednesdays. Not because I'm (not) awesome, but because I learn so much from preparing for them. Here is today's. I want to remind myself of this every morning...
Jesus is more valuable than your stuff.
Jesus is more valuable than family. Jesus is more valuable than life.
Your soul is more important than your body.
Giving up your stuff, your family, and your life doesn’t sound like a very good deal. But, listen to what Jesus is really saying in these verses: you will have treasure in heaven, treasure hidden in a field, pearl of great value, whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Jesus isn’t just asking you to give up everything to prove that you like Him a lot. He’s telling you that there is something better than what you have. He’s calling you to give up stuff that won’t last and isn’t worth anything in order to gain something that is worth everything and will last forever. He’s offering you eternal life. He’s offering you Himself. He’s offering you real peace and lasting joy. He’s offering you the greatest treasure you could ever imagine. And He promises that it will be worth the cost.
Jesus is more valuable than your stuff.
...a man came up to [Jesus], saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have kept. What do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. - Matt 19:16-22
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. - Matt 13:44-46
Jesus is more valuable than family. Jesus is more valuable than life.
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. - Matt 10:37-39
Your soul is more important than your body.
Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? - Matt 16:24-26
