Romans 5:6-10
To Whom Did He Show His Love?
1) Weak (v 6) – Likely to die
a. Without strength (incapable of living up to God’s standards)
b. Helpess (unable to bring ourselves to God)
c. Unworthy (unworthy of His love and mercy)
d. Unfit (unprepared for a godly life)
2) Ungodly (v 6) – Deserving to die
a. Unrighteous (dirty, guilty)
b. Undeserving (of mercy or being saved from death)
c. Unlovable (no qualities deserving of affection)
3) Sinners (v 8) – Sentenced to die
a. Slaves of sin (sin is master rather than God)
b. Separated from God (God cannot be united with sin)
c. Sentenced to death (the punishment of sin is death)
4) Enemies (v 10) – Asking to die
a. Opposed to God (set against Him)
b. Offensive to God (sinning against Him)
How Did He Show His Love?
1) Christ died
a. God sent His only beloved son to die for us, in our place.
Human love is usually, maybe always, based on the attractiveness or desirability of the object of love. Or when love is returned. God proves His love as holy (different) by loving and demonstrating His love toward the most unattractive, undesirable, repulsive, rebellious, hateful, guilty traitors. But, not loving us so that we remain weak, ungodly, sinful, and at enmity. He loves us and dies for us so that we might have His strength, His righteousness, His power for godly living, and peace with Him forever.
