I look for the house through my broken windshield
the crack that expanded so quickly that hot summer day
It's cold outside as I run up to the weathered door
it was always wide open in the warm springtime
I turn the rusty knob and walk across the threshold
there used to be a brightly colored rug beneath my feet
It's dark and damp inside the creaking, moaning walls
no longer is there sunlight streaking through the blinds
I work my way through the abandoned halls to the den
the sofa with pillows and throws has been removed
I sit down on the floor to watch the dust float up into the air
and I remember that this house really isn't home at all
